1134Transferring Knowledge and Cooperating in Culture, Education and CityASSOOTHE06.235925-75.57513699999998Best practices and their exchange in the spheres of culture, education and city have unified and transformed the civil societies of Medellin and Barcelona. In order to promote spaces and contribute to collaborative and open innovation environments, cities carry out actions targeted at strengthening social, human, institutional and democratic abilities. The success of these civic policies is based mainly on meetings and hybridization and on the application of an across-the-board culture of cooperation among organizations, businesses, universities and institutions. The Cátedra Medellin-Barcelona, led by the Kreanta Foundation, fosters knowledge transfers in culture, education and city between the two cities and boosts the values of bilateral cooperation. This Metropolis Initiative, works from the year 2009 with the City Council of both cities, Comferalco-Antioquia, the Medellín’s EAFIT University, while copromoter entities of the project and other 13 collaborator institutions. The project has the mission of establishing a stable and ongoing relationship of cooperation between the Medellin and Barcelona civil societies to carry out the exchange and generation of knowledge among its citizens, businesses, entities and institutions. The Cátedra initiative is part of a new vision of development cooperation based on the leadership of cities, the important role of civil society and the development of a form of governance that values creativity and innovation. www.metropolis.org/initiatives/culture-education-city@metropolis_orghttp://www.facebook.com/metropolis.org01/01/2012 0:00:0031/12/2014 0:00:0016/05/2012 13:44:42Metropolis - The World Association of the Major Metropolises134-transferring-knowledge-and-cooperating-in-culture-education-and-cityMetropolismetropolis@metropolis.orgMedellínMedellín, Antioquia, Colombia

4121Concrete actions taken by metropolises to mitigate, anticipate and adapt to climate change ASSOGREE048.8566142.3522219000000177Tackling climate change and its adverse effects will require metropolitan decision makers to implement adapted policies and actions.Climate change prevention should cover as one whole both actions aimed at lessening the effects of climate change (cutting greenhouse gas emissions and setting carbon limits) and those aimed at anticipating and adapting to it (reducing the vulnerability of ecosystems and societies, guiding the growth of urban and regional spaces, preservation of natural and agricultural areas, etc.).It is essential to make an overall reflection on the actions that should be implemented to minimize the contradictions between economic development and the wellbeing of populations with regard to climate change. This Metropolis Initiative is led by the Regional Council of Île-de-France and the IAU-IdF (Institut d'Aménagement et d'Urbanisme de la région d’Île-de-France) and has the support of the Porto Alegre City Council. Objectives:• Propose actions to tackle climate change in cities, as well as recommendations for an active participation of the different actors of the society. • To think about modalities of governance and the organization at the territory and its different political levels in order to improve the coordination and the conciliation of the set of actors acting to deal with climate change. To that end the measures put in practice will be shared to give them visibility, in order to promote good conducts between the population and to promote the positive action of local governments. http://www.metropolis.org/initiatives/climate-change@metropolis_orghttp://www.facebook.com/metropolis.org01/01/2012 0:00:0031/12/2014 0:00:0016/05/2012 12:02:50Metropolis - The World Association of the Major Metropolises121-concrete-actions-taken-by-metropolises-to-mitigate-anticipate-and-adapt-to-climMetropolismetropolis@metropolis.orgParisParis, Île-de-France, France
5120Integrated Strategic Planning and Public-Private Partnerships ASSOPLAN028.63530877.22496000000001Strategic planning with the involvement of the private sector will allow Indian cities to improve their capacity to provide infrastructure and services. Metropolis wants to engage with Indian cities and the challenges they face in meeting the increased demand for physical and social services and raising the quality of life for over 300 million people who live below the poverty line and mostly concentrated in urban areas. This Metropolis Initiative, led by the Department of Planning and Community Development of the State of Victoria (Melbourne) and the United Nations Global Compact Cities Programme and in collaboration of India’s National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and other Indian state government agencies, aims to build the capacity of municipal authorities’ staff in planning the provision and maintenance of basic infrastructure using integrated strategic planning methods and involving the private sector in the process. The main goal of this Initiative is to develop an integrated strategic planning model as a tool for decision-making and monitoring that links general protocols to an applied process which can be adapted to local frameworks and oriented towards infrastructure development. As part of this exercise it is intended to:• Develop a working model in conjunction with one or two cities that might be extended to other cities• Orient the planning model around public-private partnerships• Link the planning model to the development of social indicators www.metropolis.org/initiatives/strategic-planning@metropolis_orghttp://www.facebook.com/metropolis.org01/01/2012 0:00:0031/12/2014 0:00:0016/05/2012 11:34:52Metropolis - The World Association of the Major Metropolises120-integrated-strategic-planning-and-public-private-partnershipsMetropolismetropolis@metropolis.orgNew DelhiNew Delhi, NCT, India
6115Comparative Study on Metropolitan Governance ASSOPLAN0-23.5489433-46.6388182Metropolises are finding innovative ways to finance projects and manage urban growth, as they continue to expand their footprint across administrative and political borders. The role of metropolitan governments is gradually expanding beyond the provision of services and the maintenance of infrastructures. Now they are also responsible for fostering employment, generating revenue, improving the quality of life of their citizens and ensuring competitiveness with other territories. This Metropolis Initiative, led by the Secretariat for Metropolitan Development of the State of São Paulo, proposes elaborating a comparative study of metropolitan governance, in particular regarding public/private co-responsibility in the formulation, execution and financing of public policies. Objectives:• Compare the different strategies adopted by cities in relation to the metropolitan structure• Understand the forms of relations of the different agents in metropolitan planning and management• Analyze the different forms of funding structural investments• Transfer knowledge among Metropolis members and collaborating institutions• Disseminate information and raise awareness about metropolitan leadership• Advise cities on improving or adjusting their metropolitan framework• Publish a comparative study of metropolitan governance with technical and political recommendationsThis Initiative provides a practical approach to metropolitan governance, analyzing the political framework of these cities and regions and their socioeconomic development, structural projects, funding and public-private relations. Technical and specialized consultancy methodology shall be organized in collaboration with cities and experts. The different activities proposed are open to interested cities and other similar organizations.  http://www.metropolis.org/initiatives/metropolitan-governance@metropolis_orghttp://www.facebook.com/metropolis.org01/01/2012 0:00:0031/12/2014 0:00:0016/05/2012 10:53:02Metropolis - The World Association of the Major Metropolises115-comparative-study-on-metropolitan-governanceMetropolismetropolis@metropolis.orgSão PauloSão Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil
7114Agile Cities for a New Age of Accessibility, Efficiency and GrowthASSOOTHE055.676096812.568337100000008New technologies can be used effectively to meet cities’ climate, urban service, social and economic objectives. As urbanization trends continue, cities are dealing with complex challenges. At the same time, citizens have a profusion of tools - such as mobile phones, Internet access - to help them live better lives. At the intersection of these are opportunities both for cities and citizens. The application of new ‘smart solutions’ helps complex systems become more efficient, increasing connectivity and feedback, and providing powerful new decision-making tools. This Metropolis Initiative, a partnership between Living Labs Global, CityMart.com and The Climate Group, will support cities in answering the question on how new technologies can be used effectively to meet climate, urban service, social and economic objectives.Agile Cities will support cities in creating strategies around the use of IT and Communication to enable city services and provide a concrete platform - CityMart.com - for linking cities with solution providers in an intelligent marketplace. City governments are necessary catalysts for innovation in the clean, smart revolution.Agile Cities seeks to develop an open standard for rapid assessment and piloting of urban solutions, inviting cities and stakeholders to participate in this new, intelligent marketplace for cities. 9105Urban MattersNGOOOTHE018.539269-72.336408Urban Matters is an initiative of Cordaid that strives to improve both the living environment and the living conditions of slum dwellers. To accomplish this we work in various cities (Cape Town, Nairobi, Kisumu, Addis Abeba, San Salvador, Guatemala City, Santa Cruz and Port-au-Prince).What makes Cordaid Urban Matters exceptional is that we believe that by building connections we can bring about real change. We concentrate our efforts on specific neighbourhoods in the fast growing cities of the developing world and in these slum neighbourhoods we connect the key stakeholders such as local authorities, residents and ngo’s. Additionally we build connections between these stakeholders and new and innovative partners from both the non-profit and the profit sector from the North and engage in partnerships. Together we seek innovative and sustainable solutions to problems related to housing, clean drinking water and sewerage, waste disposal, electricity, employment opportunities for the youth and safety issues. Moreover, we use an integrated approach and connect the various initiatives in the specific neighbourhoods so they can reinforce each other. Finally, we work with the stakeholders, innovative partners and international institutions to connect and integrate resourceful financial modalities so various initiatives can grow to full-scale, sustainable urban development projectsyoutube7cdsDQGCmvI&feature=player_embeddedhttp://www.cordaidurbanmatters.com/https://twitter.com/#!/CordaidUMhttp://www.facebook.com/CordaidUrbanMatters01/01/2008 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0015/05/2012 11:49:44Cordaid105-urban-mattersUrban Mattersurbanmatters@cordaid.comPort-au-PrincePort-au-Prince, Ouest, Haiti

14100Local Development NetworksPRIVRESI0-25.4283563-49.273251500000015Local Development Networks (LDN) – The LDN is a social technology created by the Social Service of Industry in order to articulate and mobilize people from one locality to connect themselves in a network through which they can assume the leading role in the development process of the locality where they live. For its structure, an eight stages methodology is adopted, which covers the meeting of the community residents; the installation of the local committee; the creation of living and cooperation spaces; the creation of a desirable image of the future; the raising of their strengths and weaknesses; the development of a participatory plan; and the setting of a timetable. Through these stages, the project will achieve the realization of the local actions.Currently, the LDNs are present in 46 locations, in 16 cities in the State of Paraná. To coordinate and promote these networks in the communities, the role of the Local Development Agents is highlighted. These are university students who participate in the “Training Program for Local Development Agents” and who are connected to SESI PR through a paid internship. In several communities the results of the LDNs are already visible. Among these, the following are highlighted: 10,000 people in the communities directly involved in the program; more than 400 groups of people working on development activities; more than 400 people working at employability fairs; 321 partnerships between NGOs, enterprises, municipalities, schools, state governments and trade unions; more than 500 free media in the neighborhood, local and state newspapers, besides TV and radio; more than 400 interns trained as agents of change; the passage of six exchange students from three countries; the achievement of the IEL National and International Internship Award in 2010. www.desenvolvimentolocal.org.br@redeslocaishttp://www.facebook.com/desenvolvimentolocal01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0009/05/2012 16:26:33SESI Paraná100-local-development-networksSoraia Melchiorettosoraia.melchioretto@fiepr.org.brCuritibaCuritiba, Paraná, Brazil and others 46 places in 15 different cities in Paraná State

1796Climate Positive - Low Carbon Informal Hawkers !ASSOGREE020.296058785.82453980000003Street Hawkers forms major part of city economy; they make their life by selling everything from fresh produce to electronic equipment that can attract consumers belonging to rich or poor on city streets, sidewalks, public spaces. Most informal hawkers businesses are one‐person operations that use unpaid family labour on an as‐needed basis. Some sell from the comfort of covered stalls; others simply squat on the ground beside a basket or blanket displaying their merchandise. Thus informal hawking is a major source of livelihood for urban poor in reducing their poverty etc. One of the major expenses these hawkers spend is on acessing energy for illumination during night. It was observed that these vendors uses either 100w, 200w incandescent bulbs, 40w tube lights or on an average of 1Kw energy or some uses one liters of Kerosine / petrol for their illumination, which are neither environment friendlier nor visitors but shucks poor’s pockets on energy bills, smoke becomes cause of expenses for health chekups and sometime reason behind fire based disaster. Thus the thought came why not improve their lives by helping them in acessing energy or make them part of low carbon innitiatives or help them save money and be catalysts in Climate Positive efforts. Street vendors were taught about benefits of converting normal bulbs into CFL and how they can became role model for entire country. With these thoughts convinced twenty street vendors mobilised converted their normal lighting into CFL bulbs and even poorest of the poor vendor that earlier usesd to kerosine or perol are now uses CFL bulbs through rechargaebale batery backups. Which gave them new look, attracted customers, reduced energy cost, better illumination and provided brighter ambiance etc.Since 2008 Street Vendors are using CFL bulbs; it was observed from monitored 3500 in 2008 to 10000 in 2011 that they have saved 492.34, 689.28, 984.68, 1406.69 tonnes of CO2 per Year between 2008 to 2011 respectively substantially reduced energy use by 82%. Prior to switchover almost on an average uses 1Kw energy per day. What started with twenty vendors is today an example for etire country. Informal hawkers, are saving lot of energy or say reducing CO2emmission in some part of the world where coal is burned to generate energy and ignited households, instituions and commercial established etc for use of energy efficeint products that are good for Environment.  @lgnetindwww.facebook.com/LocalGovernanceNetwork01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0001/05/2012 21:55:05Dr. Piyush Ranjan Rout, Local Governance Network96-climate-positive-low-carbon-informal-hawkersDr Piyush Ranjan Routpiyush.rout@lgnet.inBhubaneswarBhubaneswar, Orissa, India
1895A Crowdsourced Citizen's Vision for the Future City.NGOOPLAN053.55108469.99368179999999Nexthamburg is an independent participation platform in Hamburg, founded in 2009 by a group of planners, journalists and cultural scientists. Nexthamburg is introducing the idea of crowd innovation into planning as a new way of open, playful and productive participation, aiming at building up a new form of collaborative and open, citizen-driven think tank for the city of Hamburg. The main goal is to build up a comprehensive and citizen-driven future city vision that will give impulse for the local urban development. The other aim is to help projects with a big community support to find their way to reality.Nexthamburg is working mainly in two formats: a long-term online-dialogue www.nexthamburg.de and a series of sessions, dynamic venues and workshops, where people can work on selected topics. Nexthamburg has been supported from 2009 to 2011 from the german federal governement and is now on the way to establish as a non-profit citizen‘s platform.Since 2009, Nexthamburg has collected and worked on more than 600 citizen's proposals and ideas in almost all fields of urban deveolpment. In autumn 2012, the citizens vision will be published in a book and handed over to the local authorities. An important milestone on the way to the citizen‘s vision was the Future Camp in february 2012 – a workcamp and cultural venue in an old theatre in the city centre of Hamburg with almost 2.000 participants and guests. Citizens were invited to select their favourite proposals and ideas and to build up thier own city vision. The Nexthamburg team believes that urban development should no longer be alone matter of authorities and governments and that people have the creativity and knowledge to set the agenda.youtubePdzav2kbpaYwww.nexthamburg.de@nexthamburghttp://www.facebook.com/nexthamburg01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0001/05/2012 10:05:01Nexthamburg95-a-crowdsourced-citizens-vision-for-the-future-cityJulian Petrinpetrin@nexthamburg.deHamburgHamburg, Hamburg, Germany
1994Live Responsibly FRIEINCL059.3289300000000118.064910000000054This is an individual contribution to invite those who live in Stockholm to participate in this initiative. The ambition is to encourage practice and engagement in more Responsible Behavior through compassion, cooperation, kindness and help as small as it can be for Stockholm as well as individual responsible behavior towards meeting the objectives of the campaign mainly:A Green City - Build environmentally sound and carbon efficient cities by encouranging efficient use of ICT when and where possible to avoid commute in the city using personal vehicle. A Safe and Healthy City - Make cities safer and healthier by practicing responsible behavior as explained above. An Inclusive City - Build socially inclusive, accessible, pro-poor, equitable and gender sensitive cities. Socially equitable development is one of the three pillars of sustainability, and is vital to creating a shared, sustainable urban future. The challenges posed by the pace and scale of contemporary urbanization require us to invest in infrastructure, development and political processes that promote inclusivity, and a pro-poor, gender sensitive agenda. An inclusive city promotes equitable rights to the city and therefore allows all citizens to partake of the urban advantage.Addressing and understanding the effect of globalization and diversity in this context and help with the unification of the understandings of the initiative.   https://www.facebook.com/IAmACityChangerStockholm01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0029/04/2012 11:35:33Nadia Zabehi94-live-responsiblyNadia Zabehinadia.zabehi@gmail.comStockholmStockholm, Stockholm, Sweden
2093Light for the Poor FRIEGREE0200Bangladesh is struggling with severe energy crisis which is seriously hampering it's development. According to UN Habitat 2005 survey, 70.4% of total urban population of Bangladesh lives in slums. Almost all urban slum households of Bangladesh have illegal electricity line which is a significant case of electricity misuse. There is no window or passage in slum houses through which sun light can enter. So, they switch on their 100w or more powerful electric bulb from morning to evening. As a result, large volume of electricity is misused from this sector. I have introduced Environment-friendly energy saving solar bottle light (ESBL) in 10 households of Muslim Camp slum area, Dhaka. This technology is widely used in Philippine. Bottle lights allow poor slum dwellers to use sufficient light with the help of plastic water bottle continuously for 10 to 11 hours without electricity consumption at daytime. This is reducing the illegal use of electricity as well as CO2 emission. It is also helping them to face frequent load shedding problems. Now they can safe extra cost from candles, kerosine etc. This technology is also feasible for single floor industries, factories and households which will reduce day time electricity consumption. Reducing misuse and consumption of electricity will help directly to reduce frequent load shedding. 57% people of Bangladesh do not have any access to electricity. It could be the only light which will help them to come out of darkness.  http://www.thedailystar.net/campus/2012/03/01/spotlight.htm  01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0028/04/2012 23:52:11Sajid Iqbal 93-light-for-the-poorSajid Iqbal sajid.env@gmail.comBangladesh Bangladesh

2291Sustainable Transport Award - Winner 2012NGOOGREE037.7749295-122.41941550000001San Francisco is becoming a model of how to work successfully with businesses and community groups to phase in and scale up sustainable transportation policies that make an immediate local and citywide impact. The City of San Francisco has worked on two major sustainable transportation initiatives over the past few years (and much more) that are capturing imaginations locally and around the world. First, the city has worked with local businesses and community groups to phase in ‘SFpark’, a smart approach to parking management in commercial districts around the city. The new ‘SFpark’ variable-rate, demand-responsive parking management system, provides real-time parking availability information online, via text, and smartphone apps. Second, the city's innovative Pavement to Parks program has created new street plazas and parklets (sidewalk platforms that replace car parking spaces) by reclaiming street space in partnerships with businesses and other community groups around the city. The parklets program has captured international attention, prompting a host of other cities to begin their own programs, from New York City to Vancouver. In the wake of these successes, San Francisco has also begun upgrading and expanding its bike network to attract riders of all ages, setting an ambitious target of 20% of all trips by bicycle by 2020. The City is also implementing slow speed zones around all city schools, and is in the process of figuring out how to expand its popular Sunday Streets program (ciclovia recreativa) to meet the demand for a weekly program. http://www.itdp.org/get-involved/sustainable-transport-award/finalists@ITDP_HQhttp://www.facebook.com/ITDP.org01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0024/04/2012 19:20:07Institute for Transportation & Development Policy91-sustainable-transport-award-winner-2012Michael Blauveltmr.blauvelt@gmail.comSan FranciscoSan Francisco, California, United States
2390Sustainable Transport Award - Honorbale Mention 2012NGOOGREE0-37.2017285-59.84106969999999The City of Buenos Aires has successfully implemented two key projects to contribute to sustainable transport: the first BRT (Metrobus) and Bike Sharing System (Mejor en Bici) in the country. Metrobus, launched in May 2011, is the first bus rapid transit system in the city and in the country. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a 2 minute frequency during peak hours and between 2 and 4 minutes off peak. Night service is every 10 to 15 minutes. Fares are equal to those of regular buses within the city. Metrobus travels 12km one way and avoids unnecessary transfers. There is already evidence of a reduction in travel time and increase in the number of passengers. The city has also developed the on-street bike lane network across the city’s central area, connecting key transport hubs, office buildings and universities. The network will soon be reaching the catchment area. To ensure cyclists’ protection, the city also implemented segregated bike lanes from car traffic, as well as traffic calming devices at intersections. Bicycle parking is also located throughout the city along roads and near public buildings. The city launched a successful bike share system in December of 2010 which consisted of 72 bikes and 3 stations. Over the first 20 days there was an average of 110 bike trips per day, 670 overall bike trips and 850 users. As of October 2011, the system has grown to 700 bikes and 20 stations, with an average of 2,500 daily bike trips, 260,000 overall trips, and 25,000 users. http://www.itdp.org/get-involved/sustainable-transport-award/finalists@ITDP_HQhttp://www.facebook.com/ITDP.org01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0024/04/2012 19:10:51Institute for Transportation & Development Policy90-sustainable-transport-award-honorbale-mention-2012Michael Blauveltmr.blauvelt@gmail.comBuenos AiresBuenos Aires, Buenos Aires F.D., Argentina
2488Inspiring a more liveable CityNGOOPLAN0-33.924868518.424055299999964United by a shared interest in projects that show potential to ignite a positive impact on the future of Cape Town, a group of professionally diverse, yet generationally connected young citizens have been encouraging public conversation under the banner, Future Cape Town. Always constructive and positive, while critically realistic, the team offers a growing number of like-minded Cape Town fans the opportunity to air their views. Boldly building a podium for the ‘next generation’ to move from a whisper to a united voice, Future Cape Town presents the collective view it helps to form to an authorized audience. In doing so, decision makers benefit from the knowledge that their issues will no longer just be debated by the a narrow sector of society, who have already mastered the skill of public participation. Our dynamic approach to problem solving, in particular urban issues, relies on occupying the space between the public sector, private sector and most importantly citizen, as a means of igniting the synergies that exist.Dedicated to remain independent in views and opinions, Future Cape Town aligns themselves closely to the work of formal structures and bodies (both governmental and commercial) that positively promote the future of the city. Furthermore, it aims to solidify collaboration opportunities with international bodies that represent similar values and efforts. The key contributors of Future Cape Town are volunteers who come from all walks of life, offering their professional views and consultation without fear or expectation, knowing that their own reputations are equally critical than the future potential of the city they share – and the actions that shape it.  http://www.futurecapetown.com@futurecapetownhttp://www.facebook.com/futurecapetown01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0023/04/2012 20:38:23Future Cape Town88-inspiring-a-more-liveable-cityRashiq Fataarmedia@futurecapetown.comCape TownCape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
2576Urban MattersNGOOOTHE0-33.924868518.424055299999964Urban Matters is an initiative of Cordaid that strives to improve both the living environment and the living conditions of slum dwellers. Finally, we work with the stakeholders, innovative partners and international institutions to connect and integrate resourceful financial modalities so various initiatives can grow to full-scale, sustainable urban development projectsyoutube7cdsDQGCmvIhttp://www.cordaidurbanmatters.com/https://twitter.com/#!/CordaidUMhttp://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo01/01/2008 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0012/04/2012 11:00:23Cordaid 76-urban-mattersUrban Mattersurbanmatters@cordaid.comCape TownCape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
2675Cycle Friendly KathmanduFRIEGREE027.70287185.31824400000005Chartered in November 2009 by a core group of concerned youths and enthusiastic individuals, the Kathmandu Cycle City 2020 (KCC 2020) has been active in promoting cycling as a means of daily commute beyond its persistent use in recreational activity or extreme sports in Nepal’s scenario. Addressing the environmental concern and the need for development of fundamental infrastructure for cyclists in the urban panorama, the Kathmandu Cycle City 2020 campaign has been organizing numerous cycling promotional and awareness programmes for the past three years. The burning issue of climate change, environmental problems, the pollution burgeoning every moment in unmanaged city like Kathmandu and haphazard road management and traffic system here convinced me and some of my friends to start working for making this city livable in near future. Besides, simply promotion of green- vehicle bicycle and raising awareness for safety ride in the unsafe streets of Kathamdnu, we are also advocating with the government for bicycle friendly infrastructures in the city. Recently, on April 6, 2012, we organized a mass cycle rally and visited concerned governmental offices and submitted petition letter demanding cycle lanes or other friendly infrastructures.Besides, we are taking part in climate change and other environmental related programs that happen in the city and around the world like 350.org, moving planet event, and there also we are making people aware of this environment, health, economy and sustainable future friendly vehicle- bicycle. We aim to turn Kathmandu City towards a cycle friendly city by 2020. http://kcc2020.blogspot.com/rajankathet@gmail.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/kcc2020/21/11/2009 0:00:0020/11/2020 0:00:0011/04/2012 18:40:32Kathmandu Cycle City 202075-cycle-friendly-kathmanduRajan Kathetrajankathet@gmail.comKathmanduKathmandu, Central Region, Nepal

2872Trash is CashASSOGREE0200Taking the responsibility to clean up the city of Nairobi. We can't wait for others to do what needs to be done now. We pay the street boys that are homeless and have little money, for the plastics they collect that have been discarded by residents from the city. We then process those plastics and sell them to the industrial companies that recycle them into finished products. This process provides employment to over 25 urban youth and reduces the amount of garbage being dumped in the streets of Nairobi.Basically, we turn trash into cash. youtubeAIUTXW9MBWE&feature=g-user-u&context=G218acd7UCGXQYbcTJ33Zi7qceFDTpGtfQp54g8R6kuiGBkkzPyK4   01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0004/04/2012 20:21:58Kamaliza Youth Group72-trash-is-cashFarouk Omondifaroukomondi@yahoo.comNairobiNairobi, Kenya

3069Rebirth of Water Bodies ASSOGREE019.314961884.79409110000006Water bodies are perhaps the only lively Oasis of the Cites. However, many often these oasis are turned into cesspool, dumping yards for waste disposal or toilet sheet for informal settlers or sites for criminal offenses; posed health hazard for people living in around. Same time no one ready to take serious actions towards rejuvenation of these water bodies, rather remained as neglected spots in city maps. The disappearance of Berhampur’s ponds started in the 80s. Historically there were numerous number ponds existed in this city interconnected to each other through underground channels. However, over the years these channels were vanished and most of the private owned lakes/ponds were reused for residential and commercial purposes. In other words most of these water died loosing their identity. Results: At a city level capacity building programmes key city decision makers were taught about benefits of restoring water bodies. Importantly city makers of late realized importance of these water bodies not only for recharging ground water but also for attracting tourist or public space for citizens. Similarly it is a source of livelihood for many in urban areas that depend on its products. While city was building its strategy for improving water bodies; an opportunity of grants from higher government emerged. Through community mapping 42 water bodies were identified covering an area of 270 acres for restoration, which surprised many city makers. The project is financially supported by Govt. of India with 80% and 10% each by both State & Local Govt. Today most of these water bodies were restored, they are contributing substantially improving city environment, the physical character of water bodies are improving and citizens got new public space. Interestingly both present & past generation were surprised as the old says they never thought blue water will ever arrive and young were astonished with arrival of blue water in neglected barren land, whom they use to call waste land. In between three summer passed but the water bodies have not gone dry and community are actively managing these water bodies with a promise that they will never let these water bodies go dry again. Today it is an inspiration story for many Indian cities in this region. www.lgnet.in@lgnetindwww.facebook.com/LocalGovernanceNetwork01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0024/03/2012 18:09:02Dr. Piyush Ranjan Rout, Local Governance Network69-rebirth-of-water-bodiesDr Piyush Ranjan Routpiyush.rout@lgnet.inBerhampurBerhampur, Orissa, India

We promoted the ‘Sustainable Cities and Regions Pact’ during the Colombian regional elections, committing more than 300 candidates and citizens to act for our sustainability.Apart from systematically and objectively recording the advances in the campaign commitments of the elected candidates, we also promote the construction of more sustainable cities and regions, via four action lines:-Making experiences and knowledge about sustainable cities/regions visible.-Promoting the interaction between citizens and political actors.-Generating knowledge fueling the collective construction of our city/region models.-Acting pragmatically, in order to produce tangible changes in the long run. 3937Living Heritage Street : The Public Art Gallery of Bhubaneswar !INDIPROD020.296058785.82453980000003Bhubaneswar is known to the world for its heritage, art & culture. However, due to negligence most of its public space or walls were used as places for urinals, butchers, displaying film posters etc, perhaps this situation is very much common in many Indian cities. Secondly, many often paintings were only visible inside Art Galleries, which normally have some few known faces than any common citizen. So our imagination was at that time why can’t we use these walls with paintings of traditional Odiya festivals and its Cultural history or say Street Wall can represent as Public Art Gallery or Living Heritage Streets for people those who can’t to go to formal Art Galleries or don't have time and keep our walls beautiful for tourist or public and peoples those walks in pedestrian paths.Somehow our thought were accepted by people managing Cities. The result, today most of streets in Bhubaneswar was beautified with traditional colorful painting involving local artisans with support by various corporate houses. Even now we don’t found any ugly activities around our street walls, rather many localities are beautified their own walls with paintings and on top many cities are now days replicated wall paintings in their cities. One way we could say it was a good initiative to beautify cities along with encouraging more people to walk around these public arts. More importantly this model can be used by any cities interested to beautify its ugly spot and move the Art towards more public.  www.lgnet.in@lgnetindwww.facebook.com/LocalGovernanceNetwork01/01/1900 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0007/02/2012 19:27:57Dr. Piyush Ranjan Rout, Local Governance Network37-living-heritage-street-the-public-art-gallery-of-bhubaneswarDr Piyush Ranjan Routpiyush.rout@lgnet.inBhubaneswarBhubaneswar, Orissa, India

4133Silent Climate ParadeFRIEGREE052.52426813.406290000000013The Silent Climate Parade is a new form of demonstration - people dancing silently through the street for a climate-friendly future. It's not only a protest, it actually demonstrates that a low-carbon future is not dull and gray, but can be fun and colorful. And it's a protest that doesn't intimidate people by screaming or paroling, but is supposed to spark their curiosity and challenges them to think and engage with the crowd. The event happens on a global day of climate action coordinated by 350.org. More than 2000 events happened on the same day, calling for climate justice and an ambitious effort to solve the climate crisis. The Silent Climate Parade is basically a silent disco, on the streets. The DJs are on electromobiles, eco-friendly and quiet, sending out the music to everybody that borrowed a wireless headphone just before the march started. The sight of 800 people dancing silently in the streets, carrying signs, and having fun and being friendly is supposed to make people wonder what it's all about and being open to our message. It's supposed to encourage dialogue between the demonstrants/dancers and the bystanders by not appearing threatening. And it's supposed to be a fun event that is climate-friendly at the same time. We want to be the change we want to see. We wanted to create a different kind of demonstration, because we don't like the way demonstrations were done before but we do want to pass on a message and demand from our leaders as well as our peers that we need to be working harder on a solution to the climate crisis and a sustainable future. We want to counter the stereotype that climate-friendly means boring; instead we want to excite and inspire people to reimagine a brighter future that is in tune with out planet and our brothers and sisters around the planet. The event is fully organized by volunteers and passionate activists in Berlin and made possible by numerous sponsors and some financial support from organizations concerned with a sustainable future.vimeo29530713www.climateparade.de@climateparadewww.facebook.com/climateparade22/09/2012 0:00:0001/01/1900 0:00:0026/01/2012 23:19:40Silent Climate Parade e.V.33-silent-climate-paradeDaniel Hiresdaniel@projecthires.comBerlinBerlin, Berlin, Germany
